Drag-lesque: Queens, Kings, Otherlings
with Theydy Bedbug
In this workshop, we will explore how the art form of Drag can enhance and entwine with burlesque to heighten storytelling. Through embodied movement, collaborative choreography, and sensual clothing removal, we highlight our unique sensuality, within, without, or beyond gendered expectations. Using clowning, lip sync, and comedic caricature, we imagine a world in which gender is a playground where we may celebrate that which we have access to, and perform that which we desire, with playfulness and power. Through somatic exercises we’ll notice how gender shows up organically in our bodies, to contrast the ways in which it is systematically imposed on us externally, and make choices about authentic feminine and/or masculine, (and/or plant, animal, alien etc!) movements. The workshop will culminate by connecting group choreo, to lip sync, to burlesque reveals.
We will not explore the role of makeup, hair, nor costume in-depth beyond what we’ve brought and what we are already wearing. We will not discuss mainstream drag culture at length, nor the long history of drag, other than to frame us and acknowledge the roots we stand on and the branches we reach to.
Instead, this workshop will focus on the movement and performative aspects of drag.
This is a beginning to intermediate level class.
